This pair of column candlesticks is pressed in a deep glass that reads as jet black in daylight and turns a dark olive green when light passes through it. Each holder takes a standard taper candle and follows the outline of a classical column, from a capital-like top down to a fluted base.
The tapering shaft has eight crisp facets that pick up thin lines of reflection along their edges. Below the candle cup sits a rounded collar on a narrow ring, and at the foot a stack of raised bands leads into a bell-shaped base divided into shallow flutes. The underside carries a pressed starburst inside a beaded border, a motif taken from cut crystal and produced here directly in the mould.
Neither candlestick has a maker's mark or label, and the glassworks behind the model has not been identified. Fine mould seams on the rim of the cup and along the shaft show that they were made by pressing in a multi-part mould. The form and the dark bottle-glass colour suggest the second half of the 20th century.
Set on a dining table, shelf or mantel, the two columns create a strong graphic contrast against pale walls and white candles. They are offered together as a complete pair, a single vintage set rather than a current production item.
