Porcelain
Porcelain has a long tradition in Scandinavia, reaching back to the royal manufactories founded in the 18th century. This category brings together vintage Scandinavian porcelain – vases, figurines, bowls, plates and tableware made by Danish, Swedish and Finnish manufacturers, most of them from the 20th century. Look for pieces from makers such as Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Grøndahl, Arabia and Rörstrand. Underglaze painting in cobalt blue, soft blue-grey tones, clean white bodies and restrained decoration are typical of the Nordic approach to porcelain, made as much for everyday use as for display. Mid-century pieces show the move towards modern design: simple silhouettes, graphic patterns and decoration reduced to a single line or motif. A single vase or figurine works well as an accent on a shelf, while cups and plates from different series can be combined into a relaxed, mismatched table setting. Every item is an original vintage piece, not a reproduction. Each listing gives the manufacturer, the designer where known, the factory mark and an honest description of condition, including any chips, crazing or wear to the glaze.
