This vintage hanging lamp takes its form from the 19th-century oil lamp: a Rococo-style cast brass frame, a ribbed milk glass shade and a white ceramic font, now fitted for electric light. It was most likely made in Western Europe during the second half of the 20th century, roughly between the 1960s and the 1980s. The maker is not known.
Two openwork scrolled arms with lattice panels carry the central fitting and hang from decorative chains with elongated, floral-cast links. Above a perforated gallery ring rises the shade: a ribbed bell of opal glass, a band of small beads and a ruffled collar whose rim fades into warm brown. Below the ring, a squat ceramic font with a twisted, swirling relief stands in place of the old oil reservoir, held by a pierced brass cup that ends in a turned finial.
Dark antiqued metal, bright brass and white glass give the lamp a lived-in, traditional look, and the opal glass spreads a soft, even light. Revival pendants of this kind were made across Western Europe in the post-war decades, so the lamp is best read as a decorative reinterpretation of the oil lamp rather than a period original. A single example, suited to a dining table, a kitchen island or a generous hallway.
