The Sakura table lamp was designed by Danish glass designer Michael Bang (1944-2013) for Holmegaard and produced in the 1980s. This pink version has a rounded, egg-shaped glass base: white at the shoulder, then a soft band of pink that spreads around the belly and is cut through with fine brown and golden-toned streaks.
Sakura belongs to the lamps Bang drew for Holmegaard during the 1980s. Instead of a single flat colour, the pink drifts through the glass in an irregular pattern, so each base has a look of its own. The glass is joined to a brushed steel collar and stem, with a white socket on top. A paper Holmegaard of Copenhagen label, marked Made in Denmark, is still attached to the glass.
The shade shown in the photographs is there for illustration only and is not part of the lamp. Without it, the form reads as a small glass sculpture: pale, heavy and quiet, with the pink working as an accent rather than the main statement. A good fit for a bedside table, a sideboard or a shelf where the base can be seen in daylight as well as lit.
