This Torino Mellem table lamp was designed by the Danish glass artist Michael Bang for Royal Copenhagen and made at the Holmegaard glassworks in the 1990s. Mellem is the medium size of the Torino series, taller than the small Lille version of the same lamp, so the height is worth checking when comparing listings.
The base is cased opal glass: a milky white body with streaks of cobalt blue that rise from the shoulder and dissolve towards the foot. The silhouette is a slender baluster with a narrow neck and a softly flared, rounded foot. The blue pattern is never repeated exactly, so each lamp reads a little differently from every angle, and lit from inside the glass takes on a gentle, even glow.
Holmegaard merged with the Royal Porcelain Factory in 1985, and from then on its glass was sold under the Royal Copenhagen name. This lamp still carries its original black and gold "Crystal Royal Copenhagen" label with the crown and three wavy lines. Bang worked for Holmegaard for many years and was known for expressive colour effects in glass, and Torino is a quieter, more domestic example of that approach.
The lamp is offered as a base only. The pleated shade visible in the photographs is for illustration and is not included.
