The Torino table lamp was designed by Michael Bang in 1990 and made by the Holmegaard glassworks for the Royal Copenhagen brand, which Holmegaard had joined through a merger in 1985. This Danish lamp from the 1990s has a body of opal glass with a soft pink pattern, and it shows the quieter side of late twentieth-century Scandinavian glass.
Bang was closely tied to Holmegaard's hand-blown opal-white lamps, a speciality of the glassworks, and the Torino is a restrained example of that tradition. The body is a slender, baluster-like vase that rises from a wide, softly rounded foot to a narrow neck. The glossy surface sits over a milky opal core, which gives the white glass an even, almost porcelain-like depth when the lamp is lit.
Pink-mauve streaks gather around the shoulder and climb the neck before fading into the white of the lower body. As with most hand-blown glass, the pattern is individual to each piece. A round Royal Copenhagen label with a crown and wave marks is attached to the shoulder of the lamp.
