This pair of Soholm stoneware table lamps comes from the Lilia series, model 1221, designed by Haico Nitzsche in the 1970s at the Soholm pottery on the Danish island of Bornholm. Each lamp is a plain cylindrical base with a short shoulder, painted by hand with a leaf and berry motif.
Soholm Keramik, founded in Ronne in 1941, built its name on glazed stoneware with a studio character. Nitzsche, a trained ceramist who joined the pottery in 1974, brought a looser, more graphic hand to its decoration, and the Lilia lamps are a good example: the large leaves are laid in with dark slate-blue and ochre, outlined in warm brown and set against a speckled, off-white glaze. A dark brown band marks the shoulder, and the unglazed foot ring shows the raw clay body.
The glaze is glossy with a visible iron speckle, and the brushwork differs slightly from one lamp to the other, as expected from hand-decorated pottery. The underside carries the Soholm Made in Denmark mark, the model number 1221 and an impressed signature. Both lamps are fitted with a white socket and a cord leaving the base at the side.
The lamps are offered without shades. The pleated shades visible in some photographs are shown for illustration only and are not included. Sold together as a matching pair.
