This table lamp base in white opal glass was designed by Michael Bang for the Danish glassworks Holmegaard and made around 1980. A cloud-like patch of turquoise glass, scattered with darker blue-green speckles, is cased beneath the glossy outer layer, so the decoration sits inside the wall of the glass rather than on its surface.
Michael Bang joined Holmegaard in the late 1960s and spent much of his career there shaping the company's lighting. Many of his lamps were blown at Fyens Glasværk in Odense, which belonged to the Holmegaard group, and his opal designs from this period pair a calm, milky body with a single freehand accent of colour. Because the coloured glass is applied by hand during blowing, the size and outline of the turquoise patch differ from one lamp to the next.
The form is simple and well balanced: a rounded, slightly squared body rising into a slender neck, finished with a brushed steel collar that holds the lamp fitting. Switched on, the opal glass picks up a soft glow, while the turquoise patch keeps its depth in daylight. It works equally well on a sideboard, a desk or a bedside table.
Please note that the pleated lampshade shown in the photographs is not part of the offer and is included for illustration only. The listing covers the glass lamp base with its fitting.
