Model 1072 is a Soholm table lamp base designed by Einar Johansen in the 1960s and made at the pottery in Ronne on the Danish island of Bornholm. This example is turned in dark, unglazed stoneware, with a deep cobalt blue glaze kept to the shallow dish around the stem.
The shape is easy to read: a tall tapering cone rises out of a bowl-shaped foot. Where the glaze collects around the base of the stem it turns darker and breaks into a fine crackle, while the rest of the body stays matte and shows the faint throwing lines left by the wheel. A plain white porcelain socket sits on top.
Soholm has made pottery on Bornholm since 1835, and its hand-thrown stoneware lamp bases from the 1960s are well known among collectors of Danish ceramics. The underside of this lamp carries the model number 1072 and further hand-incised markings, which is how pieces from this series are usually identified.
Because the glaze was applied by hand, the depth of the blue and the pattern of the crackle belong to this lamp alone. It is a single piece, equally at home as a sculptural object on a shelf or with a shade on a desk or bedside table.
