This pair of Apotheker table lamps was made by the Danish glassworks Holmegaard to a design by Sidse Werner in the 1980s. Both bases are in glossy black glass with a satin metal collar below the socket, and they are offered together as a matching set of two.
The name Apotheker refers to the apothecary jars that the shape recalls. The design began as a pendant light and was later translated into a table lamp in the same cylindrical language: a plain glass column with a broad shoulder, two fine ridges around the middle and a rolled foot. Sidse Werner worked as an industrial designer at Holmegaard, and the Apotheker series remains one of the lighting designs most often associated with her name among collectors of Danish glass.
The lamps are sold without shades. The pleated white shades visible in some of the photographs are for illustration only and are not included, so the bases can be paired with whatever shade suits the room.
The deep black glass shows its form mainly through reflections that run along the shoulders and rings, while the brushed collar adds a cool contrast. A complete pair that matches in shape and finish is not always easy to find, and these work naturally on either side of a sofa, bed or sideboard.
